Mazda mx5 jdm12/9/2023 ![]() ![]() 56kms it was immaculate ,& drove like a dream, superb bracking & at 15K way better value ,& car in my opinion ,than the BMW Z4. Everything works beautifully, even though it's 12 years old ,another typical Japanese vehicle trait. ![]() 2 litre 6 speed, limited slip diff, Bose stereo, full leather upholstery, reasonable boot space, considering the retractable roof. I'd test driven one, but as I'd owned a 1989 MX5 brand new ,& liked it, I saw a 2007 MX5 in a mate's car yard & took it for a spin. I wanted a coupe/convertible, & was about to spend 40 K on a 2007 BMW Z4 3.2, with low k.m.s. If I recall the roadster coupe was much better in this regard though I only drove that one occasionally. However the wind noise on country trips up (think bombing down the Calder etc) was really annoying and the fact it rattled like a skeleton gravity racing a shopping trolley over any bumps got old quick. Pros - it replaced a Micra and if you treated it as an almost as practical, easy to park and nip about in small car that can also get you sunburnt and give you some pants fizz its great. I only had the MX-5 exactly 5 months but I can confirm a 150k service and new fuel pump at City Mazda came in about 700 bucks, fuel economy (mix of fanging and commuting) was bang on 10l/100kms and it has ruined all other cars for me as far as being fun to drive is concerned. I tested an 05 C180k (that Merc Bug) on my day off, it was 2 mins away, it drove nicely had a bunch of books and 45 mins later Estelle was gone and it was Gunter time. However 1st gear sometimes was a bit hard to get and I was lurking hard on a cheap auto car to help my partner get her L hours up (apparently yelling "give it more beans" when using 2nd for a hill start is not amazing tuition) and it being silly to own 2 cars when I also have a motorbike for lightweight manual twisty rain in your face thrills meant investigating swapping. It was mainly parked outside and never leaked. Good commuter, big boot and the roof goes up and down in 5 secs. Roof down, heater on, stars above, rorty engine farting away and shifting every 2 secs through the lovely short throw lever that sits at palm level - fantastic car. 07 weird purple red LE with the wacko BBS wheels that grew on me quickly. It took me 5 secs of driving it to make the decision. I accidentally sold my Micra thinking I'd get into a cheap 98-03 CLK but when that car was boring to drive and the Micra already sold I panicked doubled my budget and bought the cheapest MX-5 I could see inline. The NC MX-5 was my dream car since my dad had a RC. That's good to know, especially as I regard myself as a custodian, rather than an owner.įirstly sorry for no pics I deleted them off my phone for closure reasons. ![]() Watching the market, and perhaps as a consequence of the pandemic, It seems to be an appreciating asset. I'll dispose of it when I can no longer physically access the cockpit, although I may install an invalid hoist in my garage to extend that time somewhat. The other problem on high speed long journeys is the noisy hardtop, which unless you get the fit just right, will howl above 90 kph. Maybe cruise control (a factory fit on this version in the USA) may be the way to go. I've taken it on some long road trips, where it has performed well, although it is difficult to keep below the legal limit, as the turbo kicks in at that speed. It has been completely reliable, and does not drink fuel at an extraordinary rate unless you overuse the turbo, and with the hardtop makes a practical tourer. It drives like a sophisticated go-kart, has enough torque (blower inspired) to allow one gear higher everywhere, and the gearshift is sublime. The SE is great fun, and my example, with an imported Jasper Conran (Connolly leather and Wilton carpets) is a collectors item. It served me well for two years, when I discovered the SE for sale when visiting Newcastle, and bought it. Once that was over, I traded the ute for a second, much older MX5, and bought a hardtop for it. Anyway, I kidded myself by noting that the Commodore was front engined, had rear drive, independent suspension all round, and handled well. My offspring were going through the sharehouse experience, and they seemed to be moving house with monotonous regularity. Unfortunately, family commitments forced me to swap the MX5 for a Commodore ute. You can't fit two people and a baby capsule into a two seater roadster. It was near new, owned by a couple for whom pending parenthood made the MX5 impractical. I bought the first one post retirement, and enjoyed it for five years. ![]()
